Bloomeries
I am not going to go into a lot of detail about
bloomeries. There is lots on line about them.
Anthony Cohen (of Underground Railroad fame) told me the slaves
were told to "Follow the Blooms" when they reached
Connecticut. These were
probably the furnaces, which they could follow north along the
Housatonic Valley. The slaves would have been familiar
with bloomeries, and furnaces
are just large scale bloomeries.
They uses bog iron. Salisbury was bog iron.
Here is a list of bloomeries in the Salisbury District.
I will just list the towns.
